“Well, where’s your real family?”  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that growing up. As an Asian American adoptee, misidentification and ignorance from others has become a part of my narrative.

I have always been drawn to understanding family and the adoptive characteristic and the role it plays in one’s identity. I devoted my time to observing Lily, a 5 year old adoptee and her family through documentary photography and exploring how their family dynamic forms their values, and how she has been able to grow as an independent individual as well as a family member.
