Peer Career Advisor Handbook
Client: Office of Career Services provides professional development resources and counseling to students at Ithaca College.
Target Audience: The Peer Career Advisors (PCAs) are student leaders employed to assist students in 1-1 drop-in sessions with resume and cover letter development, job search, interview, and grad school help.
Goal: I wanted to created a new guidebook for the PCAs that was engaging, well organized, and had a modern look. It would be used as a reference during drop-in sessions for quick help regarding procedures, career advice, and FAQs.
Experience: I had been a PCA for 3 years and observed that the previous guide looked dated, and was difficult to find information. During my entire time as a PCA, I had never desired to use the guidebook for help since it wasn’t user friendly, which defeats the whole goal of having a guide guide available. I wanted to combine all my career development knowledge with my passion for design. This was also a great opportunity to strengthen my layout and information design skills.
Process: I began by reviewing and annotating the original guide to decide what information to keep, rewrite, or remove. From there, I was able to regroup information and layout how I wanted to organize everything in the new guide based on what was prioritized and made sense in a logical order.I began sketching low fidelity layout ideas to see options to place all the information. I went through multiple iterations with the director of the PCA program to create the final guide.
Outcome: The guide successfully showcased all the information necessary to be a PCA. It was easy to read and sort each category of help.
